It is called this because it symbolizes a tree containing a flower, which in turn contains a seed, which contains a tree. Thus, the seed holds within itself the image of the tree. 
The source of Kabbalah comes from self-knowledge. Through one's own being, one can reach the Higher Worlds. This method of development is employed like any other science, where an individual observes our world with their senses and the aid of various tools, noting and accumulating all the information. Kabbalah is no different. Throughout the centuries, those who have grasped more and more and penetrated the Higher Worlds have recorded this knowledge, and this is how it has developed to this day. One generation passes and another generation arrives, but the earth remains forever. The sun rises and the sun sets, and hurries back to where it rises again. The wind blows to the south and turns to the north; round and round it goes, ever returning to its course. All rivers flow to the sea, and yet the sea is never full. To the place to which the rivers flow, there they flow back.
